Greetings all
My
name is John Szczepaniak, a freelancer writer for magazines like Retro
Gamer, and several others. I quite like writing "scene" articles, much
like this one, which was slashdotted.
I've
been speaking with my editor at RG, and he is interested in possibly
having me write an article on things. I raised the point after reading
the topic on Wikipedia removing an article on the history of you guys.
Would
the ROMhacking community be willing to aid with such an article? My
hope would to speak to various communities and groups. AGP romhack
springs to mind as well. Are there any others you could recomend?
I'd
like to ask a few questions, get people's thoughts and opinions on
subjects, quote some people, gather info on famous translation
releases, get right down to the core of how and why things happen.
Please
realise I know nothing about this world, I simply download translated
ROMs, enjoy them a great deal, but have no idea on the workings behind
how such things come about. I'm sure it's the same for most people.
This article would hopefully change perceptions.
If you guys
like the sound of this, feel free to point me in the direction of some
decent resources, and I'll come up with some preliminary questions to
post at a later date.
Nothing is definite yet, but this should be fun.

Me as well. I've already answered a bunch of questions about Starfox 2
for Devin Shockwell for his SuperFX article, something like this would
be the cake for the icing, so to speak. Got your email, will be
replying in a few days (possibly tonight.) It's just really a busy time
for me right now, midterms and all. I'm sure you understand. |

Hoho! I heard today about Mr Shockwell's assignment, ironic to find we're bumpig into each other again with work.
Unfortunately
I understand all too well about lack of time and stress. Don't worry
about the email GZ, there's no major questions in it, I was just
testing the water. Seeing as you post here, this is where I'll put all
my questions for everyone.
Oh, and hi Shih! (I assume you're the same Shih Tzu from IC?)
Seeing
as I'm posting, I may as well let you know. I've finally put those
translations you did to good use. The article should be published in
just over a month, in The Escapist. I asked for you to be credited as
translator.
Anyway, it's close to midnight where I live, so I'm calling it a night.
G'night all, and thanks for the offers of support

Hi Szczepaniak! I'm not as involved in the "scene" as some other
people here, but I'm the Gyakuten Saiban 3 guy which you've probably
seen posting on IC and I can probably say things of interest for your
article. Feel free to ask me questions about it at the email
address I posted on my website (http://comebackcourt.sourceforge.net).

Unless someone digs up Quatch, Lord Pinto, SoM2Freak or if you talk to Demi, I might have been here the longest ...
However, late 98 - 2000 and 2003 were "down-times" for me, so for those years I can't say much about what was going on.

I
don't know about that. When did you start? I think I've been around as
long as you have. I was dabbling with ROM hacking before I moved
to translations and started Transcorp.
Archaic Ruins and Damaged
Cybernetics were the big shit back then. I started in emulation and ROM
hacking '96 I think. It may have been late '95, but I can't confirm. My
memory is certainly fading.
Coincidentally, I also had some
'down-time' starting in '98 after my accident and death of
Transcorp. Hard to say how long. Somewhere during that time
I was in regular contact with j3d(the original DeJap) and some of his
projects. I am in the readme for some of his patches, but I don't
remember what I did anymore.
After that, I was a lurker for awhile until I resurfaced and decided to revive Transcorp in 2001.
Good thing I resurfaced or we probably won't be here discussing history!
Gideon
started during our 'dark' years. And we've got a few young pups
in here for recent history since our online social circles shrank and
you and I cared much less about what everyone else was doing in
our older years. So, we've pretty much got everything covered between everyone.

Hi again
I've
not forgotten, was simply very busy today (I'm on European time btw,
which is about 6 hours of ahead of New York time, to put it in
perspective).
I'll post some questions up tomorow.
Though I just want to quickly add something, regarding this topic: http://romhacking.deadbeat-inc.com/forum/index.php?topic=675.15
The
mentions of "teenage melodrama" for some translations like Seiken
Densetsu 3 (quite a favourite among retro fans), fascinates me greatly!
Sounds exciting actually, care to share any stories? Did Neil mean
inside political backstabbing? Or intense rivalry among those trying to
create a patch first for some game?
I think the whole "scene"
has more than enough content to warrant a fascinating 4 pager, since it
covers several formats and eras, and with me being an import fan, is
quite close to my heart. Besides, we had a 4 page feature recently on
the Amigo demo and "cracktro" scene, and I personally think this is
much more interesting.
So yeah, questions will be forthcoming tomorow, once I've finally gotten my workload under control.
